Your Pirate Ships
You can purchase your own pirate ships and use them to ransack the cargo ships of rival companies. To buy a pirate ship, click on Pirate Ship Orders on the left navigation bar, and go to the menu near the bottom. Select a Spaceport at which to originate the ship, and click Purchase to buy your ship. The ship will instantly be delivered to the desired Spaceport. Purchasing a pirate ship costs 400,000 credits.

Unlike cargo ships, pirate ships come equipped with 2 Engines and 1 Phasers. Nothing more can be added, nor can the Pirate Ship officers be trained. You can only have 1 pirate ship for every 3 cargo ships you own.

To put your new pirate ship to work, click on Pirate Ship Orders in the left navigation menu, and send it to lurk near a depot. When it arrives, instead of docking at the depot, it will lurk nearby, and you'll have the option to ransack ships which are 1 hour(s) from arrival at the depot and attempt to steal their cargo. Each pirate ship can ransack 1 time(s) each hour and any given cargo ship may only be ransacked 1 time(s) per hour before the local law enforcement arrives to protect it.

If a ship being ransacked belongs to an alliance whose Alliance Armada is patrolling that Star System, the armada will rush to aid it and the firepower of the armada is added to the firepower of the ship being ransacked, usually resulting in additional damage to the pirate ship. This makes it very wise to keep track of the locations of alliance armadas.
