Law Level
Because of the nature of transporting commodities, some Star Systems have taken steps to prevent unwanted or illegal substances from entering their territory. The intensity with which a Star System prevents such commodities is summed up as the Law Level of its Depot. The Law Level of a depot can range from Loose, where law enforcement is minimal at best, through Tolerant and Strict, to Oppressive, where the entire Star System is governed in a virtual police state.

The higher the Law Level, the more risk of being caught smuggling illegal commodities, but the higher the profits for successfully eluding the law enforcement. The training of your ship's Tactical Officer is a factor in successful smuggling.

Trading commodities that are illegal at a Loose depot runs little risk, while doing so at a Oppressive depot is almost guaranteed to get you caught. The repercussions of getting caught can include fines, imprisionment, loss of cargo and ship, and most importantly, degradation of your Legal Standing in the Kentaran Galaxy.

The Law Level of any depot can be determined from the Galactic Map or by clicking Depots on the left nav menu and then selecting any commodity that it trades in. Law Levels do change from time to time, so it is a wise to keep an eye on any regular trading in illegal goods that you may do, so as not to be surprised by sudden changes in law enforcement.
